Special Educational Needs Policy

Aims

  • To encourage the full inclusion of children with special needs and value diversity within our setting.
  • To work in partnership with the families of children with special needs and with all agencies involved with the child, to ensure that their needs are properly identified, assessed and addressed.
  • To ensure entitlement to full Foundation Stage curriculum according to the child’s needs. This would be adapted if necessary to meet these needs.
  • To meet everyone’s needs in the setting in accordance to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
  • To provide opportunities for staff to develop the necessary skills, attitudes and insights for working with young children with special needs.

     

Objectives

  • To ensure that children with special needs have the opportunity to take part in activities alongside other children.
  • To work with parents and agencies outside the nursery to meet children’s specific needs.
  • To take into account the views of both the parents and the child.
  • To use staff effectively.
  • To implement the SEN code of practice.

     

Personnel

  • Provision for pupils with SEN is a matter for the nursery as a whole.
  • The SEN co-ordinator (SENCO) and/or manager has responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the SEN policy.
  • The SENCO for this nursery is:-
    Mrs Tracy Rhodes who has completed a Special Educational Needs course and attends regular meetings to keep informed on any changes.

Admission arrangements

  • Our child:-adult ratio ensures that each child receives plenty of adult support
    and one to one activities.
  • If it is felt that a child’s needs cannot be met in the nursery without the support of a one-one worker, funding will be sought to employ one.
  • Our setting at the Methodist Church, Station Road, has a wheelchair ramp at our main entrance and the entrance to our outdoor areas.
  • We also have an accessible toilet area.

     

Co-ordination arrangements procedures

  • Inclusion-SEN pupils will have the opportunity to join in all activities alongside other pupils, according to their individual needs.
  • Individual learning plans will be done and reviewed every 6 weeks.
  • The SENCO will ensure that the Code of Practice is followed through Early Years Action and Early Years Action Plus.
  • Parents will be involved in the assessment and review of their child’s progress.
  • The SENCO and/or manager will liaise with parents and outside agencies on a regular basis.
  • Healing Village Nursery will help with the transmission from the nursery to the school, the child will be attending.Assisant SENCO is Mrs Sally Mumby 

     

Staff development

  • Our staff, attend whenever possible, in service training on special needs arranged by the Pre-School Learning Alliance and other professional bodies.
  • The SENCO will attend regular meetings with the area SENCO.
  • The SENCO will support the child’s key worker.

     

External support with the Area SENCO and other agencies.
SENCO will share information with other agencies with parental permission.
